Builders Season 1 Review, Pumping Iron and Jokes That Fall Flat

Looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy series set in a Mumbai gym? Builders Season 1 might be on your watchlist, but hold your horses (or treadmills). This series, despite its quirky premise, struggles to deliver humor that lands.

Story

Mandar (Swapnil Kokam) has his work cut out for him. Fresh off the bus from Malegaon, he’s tasked with managing his brother-in-law’s gym and securing five new annual memberships – all within a month! Talk about pressure.

Along the way, he encounters a cast of eccentric gym regulars: Parul, the aspiring actress; Kameshwar, the lovelorn bachelor; Vishakha, the doctor on a weight-loss mission; and Uncle, the retired homeopathic doctor with advice for everyone.

The characters are certainly unique, but their quirks often veer into annoying territory. Kameshwar’s desperate attempts at romance and the portrayal of a “loony-eyed” gym girl feel dated and insensitive.

Review

Builders aspires to be a laugh riot, but its humor falls flat more often than it hits. The jokes rely heavily on outdated tropes, body shaming, and forgetful protagonist gags. It feels like the writers raided a dusty comedy rulebook from the 90s.

In today’s landscape of clever and edgy comedies, Builders feels like a relic of the past. The series struggles to find its footing, leaving viewers wondering if the characters they’re watching even exist in real life.

Verdict

If you’re searching for a funny series set in a unique environment, Builders Season 1 is a show you can skip. Its reliance on tired jokes and uninspired characters makes for a tedious viewing experience. There are plenty of other great comedy series out there – do yourself a favor and choose one that will leave you chuckling, not groaning.
